1. Application software is specific purpose software which is used by user for performing specific task. System software is general purpose software which is used to operate computer hardware and provides platform to run application software.
2. Application software is installed according to the requirements of the user. System software gets installed when the operating system is installed on the computer.
3. Application software is machine independent. System software is machine dependent.
4. Application software cannot run without the presence of the system software. System software can run independently of the application software.
5. Users interact with application software while doing different activities. Generally,users do not interact with system software as it works in the background .
6. Application Software is written in a high-level language like Java, C++, .net, VB, etc. System Software is written in a low-level language, i.e. assembly language.
7. Application Software runs as and when the user requests. System Software starts running when the system is turned on, and runs till the system is shut down.
8. Some examples of application softwares are word processor, web browser, media player, etc Some examples of system softwares are compiler, assembler, debugger, driver, etc.
