Cognitive Dissonance

Cognitive Dissonance is the situation involving inconsistent or conflicting thoughts, attitudes, beliefs, or behavior. It is the feeling of uncomfortable tension which comes from holding two conflicting thoughts in mind at the same time related to behavioral decision and change in attitude which produces the feeling of discomfort. When there is a discrepancy between belief and behavior, something must change in order to eliminate or reduce the dissonance.

Cognitive dissonance is powerful motivator which leads to change conflicting belief or action. This discomfort or incompatibility can be released by three actions.

  1. Change your behavior
  2. Justify your behavior by changing conflict
  3. Justify your behavior by adding new cognition

Strategies to Reduce Cognitive Dissonance

People are uncomfortable in dissonance so they try to reduce this discomfort or seek consistency by using different strategies like;

  1. Focus on Supportive Beliefs to balance dissonance
  2. Reduce Conflicting Idea and know the importance of specific
  3. Change the conflicting belief which helps to make consistency with other beliefs or behavior.
