Effective Reading Strategies
-
Turning off the Monologue of Making Sounds
Since childhood, we were nurtured that if we try to reading by speaking loudly we will be able to read and remember things very quickly. Being an adult we have the capacity to capture and process things very quickly rather than speaking out the things loud. This is a technique that requires readers to be focused on the things that they are reading. Focusing in a sense that the readers should not speak out the words loudly rather use their eyes throughout the things that they want to read and remember.
In case if you got something interesting while reading you can use the monologue and enjoy your reading as well. Observing things helps in remembering things very quickly. It is said that if we focus on what our eyes are seeing it can increase our speed up to three times of reading and remembering things.
-
Scanning the words that are Important
In school, we have been taught to read every word and things in a paragraph. It generally takes a long time to go through every word and sentence of the paragraph that we are reading. In every paragraph, the sentences are the combination of various nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, etc.
In a paragraph not all the words are important and we can get meaning only selecting the important words which are less than 50%. Being an adult our brain has been grown enough to fill up the gaps and understand the information only by reading 50% of the paragraphs.
With proper practice, you can able to develop quickly reading skills by eliminating the unimportant sentences and words. But not all the paragraphs and writings can be read and remembered using these techniques. For example, if you want to read some novel you might need to go through every word and sentences.
-
Reading the paragraph’s first and the last sentences
Sometime it may be possible that you have already read the things that you are reading. Reading the first and last sentences of the paragraph makes you aware about want is the paragraph about and how it is concluded. If you have already read the information you can easily understand the gist of the paragraph without reading the paragraph.
If the sentence you have read firstly seems to pick up your interest then you can go through the overall paragraph to find out the real gist of the paragraph that you are reading.
-
Relating and associating the New Information to the Previously Known Things
Our brain has loads of information that has been stored in our subconscious mind which can be hard to recall when we want. If the new information that we are reading is associated with the things that we previously have in our mind then it helps to remember, organize and analyze things more quickly in an easy way (Haber, 2012). We can relate the things with some context and also with the personal experience that we have.
For example, let’s say we are going to read one of the topics related to the perceptual errors in psychology, and then we can relate the various types of errors to our personal experiences of the lives. Like Halo errors, while judging people based on their single characteristics, recency effect; judging people on the basis of a recent experience only. In this way, it becomes easy to understand things very quickly in a well-structured manner.
-
Write some of the notes from your reading
Only a few percentages of people in the world have the capability to understand and remember everything they read, see and hear as they were blessed with the good memories which may be natural or nurtured. The other people need to write important things as they cannot catch everything they go through while reading.
After you read the things, you can take out the key points from your reading which you can look in the future as it is not possible for the brain to remember the everything you had read and retrieval might not be possible always.
Conclusion
There are various forms of readers on the basis of their own personality and their own way of reading, organizing, and remembering things. Some of the people are active readers as they have the capacity to retain the things that they read whereas some of the people are the passive readers who forget the information quickly what they read.
There are various techniques and methods that can be used to read, organize, and memorize the information quickly. Reading without speaking out loud is one of the important techniques that help to read and remember things quickly. Similarly scanning the important words, an association of words with context, taking out the keynotes helps to read, organize and remember things more quickly.
