Qualities of a Good Leader

To be effective, a leader must possess the following qualities:

  • 1) Intelligence
  • 2) Initiative and creative ability
  • 3) Power of judgment
  • 4) Vision and foresight
  • 5) Mental and emotional maturity
  • 6) Flexibility
  • 7) Technical competence
  • 8) Self confidence
  • 9) Human relations attitude

1) Intelligence

The capacity for thought and reasoning, especially at a high level, is intelligence. Many psychologists claim that the level of intelligence can be increased in an individual through various training methods, even though intelligence is a natural quality of an individual [i.e inherent in nature].

2) Initiative and creative ability

Leaders must function in an orderly and purposeful manner during times of uncertainty. During times of uncertainty and unfamiliarity with hope, people also look to the leader.

3) Power of judgment

An effective leader should be able to analyze things critically. Focused on the major goals or objectives, he can break down the whole situation into manageable sub parts for closer examination. As a result, a good leader makes progress towards the main goals of an organization.

4) Vision and foresight

It is essential that a leader be capable of assessing the future environment and its trends. Based on logical and foresight-based policies and programs, he formulates his policies and programs.

5) Mental and emotional maturity

A leader should be mentally and emotionally stable. It is crucial that he is not biased at any point in time. His actions should be consistent and he should not be prone to anger. In difficult or troublesome times, he must be able to adjust to all situations.

6) Flexibility

Leadership styles vary according to the necessity under various circumstances, giving rise to three distinct types: autocratic, democratic, and free-rein leadership styles.

7) Technical competence

Leaders must follow certain guidelines for success when leading people. Leaders with “technical competence” are capable of handling certain functions of management, such as planning, organizing, analyzing, advising, making decisions, controlling, and winning cooperation.Leaders’ technical competence may enable them to win the support of their followers.

8) Self confidence

An individual who wants to be a good leader must first be self-confident and able to set direction in a desired direction. One who is confident and inspiring becomes a source of inspiration and confidence for others. A leader’s confidence helps him draw out the trust and best efforts of the team members to successfully complete the tasks.

9) Human relations attitude

Successful leaders have an adequate understanding of human relations, which means the way they interact with people. Getting the people’s voluntary and full cooperation for achieving the set goal is an important task for a leader, which is why he must attempt to get an intimate understanding of the people and their relationship to one another. The ability to understand human behavior and the way they react to different situations is important for a leader.
