Data warehouses

Data warehouses are data management systems that consolidate and centralize large amounts of data from multiple sources. Data scientists and business analysts can use its analytical capabilities to gain valuable business insights from their data, improving decision-making.

The purpose of data warehousing (DW) is to provide meaningful business insights by collecting and managing data from a variety of sources. In BI systems, the data warehouse provides the core for data analysis and reporting. It is a blend of technologies and components that facilitate the strategic use of data. A data warehouse connects and analyzes data from heterogeneous sources. A business uses it to store a large amount of information for querying and analyzing instead of executing transactions.

Types of Data Warehouse

1. Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW):

It offers a unified approach for organizing and presenting data across the enterprise and provides decision support services. An enterprise data warehouse (EDW) is a centralized warehouse. As well as classifying data by subject, it gives access to the data based on those divisions.

2. Operational Data Store:

When organizations do not have a Data warehouse or an OLTP system to meet their reporting needs, an operational data store, also known as ODS, is what they require. Data warehouses in ODS are updated in real time, making them ideal for routine activities such as storing employee records.

3. Data Mart:

In an independent data mart, data can be directly collected from sources, so it is a subset of the data warehouse. It is designed for a particular line of business, such as sales, finance, or sales.

Characteristics of Data Warehouse

The data warehouse is composed of a number of different types of data, including data that is subject-oriented, data that is integrated, time-variant, nonvolatile, and data that is granular.

A) Subject-oriented

The data warehouse is not a database normalization system, but rather a collection of objects around the enterprise’s subjects. Subject orientation can be very useful when it comes to decision-making. The process of gathering the objects needed is called subject-oriented.

B) Integrated

Data warehouses contain integrated data from several operational systems, so all inconsistencies must be removed. These inconsistencies may arise from naming conventions, measurement of variables, encoding structures, physical attributes, etc.

C) Time-variant

It is important to note that operational systems are based on current values, while data warehouses have a longer time horizon (up to 10 years), so they are primarily used for forecasting and data mining. As an example, a user searching for a specific customer’s buying pattern needs to look at past and current purchases.

D) Nonvolatile

There is no regulatory or statutory requirement to update, create, or delete data in the data warehouse, which means it cannot be changed.
