Yes, it is true statement that “To understand the most important characteristics of a society, one must study its major cities.” Cities play a major role in defining a country’s social, economic, and political outlook in today’s fast-paced modern world. Each country’s major cities play a very important role in determining its economic, social as well as political status in today’s fast-paced world. Cities provide a bird’s eye view of a nation’s overall development and provide insight into its overall progress. Although the author makes a flawed assumption that looking at a large city will tell us all about a society, this is an unfair generalization.
In general, we can say the country is split into two segments. A great deal of development and urbanization is taking place in major cities, which are also known as the urban areas. In these areas, commercialization occurs and jobs are created. Secondly, there are rural areas that represent the bucolic aspect of society. Most of the cultural heritage of society is found here. Even though we know that major cities play a crucial role in maintaining international standards and expressing the socioeconomic conditions of those societies, they never give a comprehensive picture of all the characteristics of those societies. Agricultural activities are mostly carried out in rural areas, which are the backbone of our society. In order to understand that society’s rituals and customs, we must take into account the rural backdrop.
In order to get a comprehensive understanding of India, for example, looking at the major cities like Delhi, Mumbai will only provide an overview but will not provide the complete picture of factors like history and tradition. This can only be understood by exploring the countryside.As a result, major cities are helpful for understanding society’s important aspects. To get a complete picture, we should investigate other areas of society.
