Upward Communication

Upward communication occurs within an organization when information is communicated to a higher level. It is a way of providing feedback on the effectiveness of the organization. Subordinates communicate with their superiors about their problems and performance through upward communication. Upward communication is also used by subordinates to determine whether or not the downward communication has been understood. Employees can also use upward communication to share their views and ideas and to become active participants in the decision-making process.

Upward communication results in a more committed and loyal workforce in an organization because employees are given the chance to voice and discuss their dissatisfaction. The managers learn how employees feel about their jobs, colleagues, supervisors, and the organization as a whole. This allows them to take appropriate actions to improve things. In order to improve communication, there are grievance redressal systems, complaint and suggestion boxes, job satisfaction surveys and many others. Examples of Upward Communication are: performance reports made by lower level management for review by higher level management, employee attitude surveys, letters from employees, employee-manager discussions, etc.
