Karmachari Sanchaya Kosh, which is known as Employees Provident Fund (EPF) in English and कर्मचारी सञ्चय कोष in Nepali, was established in 1944 as a Nijamati Provident Fund.
The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) is managed by the Ministry of Finance on behalf of the Government of Nepal as a Provident Fund (PF) for employees of the government, public sector, and private sector.
It was the Employee Provident Fund that approved the retirement fund for the Government of Nepal (GoN), and its Provident Fund (PF) manages a fund that is intended to help its contributors upon retirement or separation from employment.
The Provident Fund also provides certain social security benefits to its contributors in addition to managing the retirement savings.
Moreover, private sector companies are also eligible to become members of the EPF, provided that such companies have at least ten (10) employees contributing regularly.

History of Provident Fund/कर्मचारी संचय कोष/ Karmachari Sanchaya Kosh in Nepal
During the Rana Regime in Nepal, Sainik Drabya Kosh (Army Provident Fund) was established in 1934, which marks the beginning of the Provident Fund in Nepal.
To remove financial hardships for army personnel after retirement, the scheme was established.
A specified percentage of army staff salaries was to be contributed to their provident fund (Sanchaya Kosh) account in Sainik Drabya Kosh.
The scheme was expanded a decade later to cover employees of the civil service as well.
To manage the scheme for civil servants working within Kathmandu, Nijamati Provident Fund (NPF) was established in 1944.
It was expanded in 1948 to provide coverage to civil servants all over the country. As part of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs, the Employees Provident Fund Department was established in 1959.
Sainik Drabya Kosh and Nijamati Provident Fund were both managed by this department. All employees of the government, including the police, are now covered by the scheme.
After the establishment of the Employee Protection Fund Department in 1961, a separate law named the “Karmachari Sanchaya Kosh Act” came into effect in 1962.
According to the act, the Karmachari Sanchaya Kosh was granted the authority to establish provident funds.
Karmachari Sanchaya Kosh was established after the amalgamation of Sainik Drabya Kosh, Nijamati Provident Fund, and Provident Fund Department.
Throughout the years, Karmachari Sanchaya Kosh (KSK) has grown by leaps and bounds, and today it provides social security to millions in Nepal.

Form 11
