Located in New Delhi, the commission has its own secretariat and operates out of Dholpur House. The UPSC has been led by Dr. Manoj Soni since April 5th, 2022. The Public Service Commission was established on 1 October 1926 as the Public Service Commission, later reconstituted as the Federal Public Service Commission by the Government of India Act 1935, and renamed as the Union Public Service Commission after independence.

As described in Part XIV of the Indian Constitution, the agency receives its charter from the Union and States. In accordance with the Constitution, the commission is responsible for making appointments to the Union and All India Services. As well as appointment, transfer, promotion, and disciplinary matters, it must be consulted by the Government. Through the President, the commission can advise the Government. However, such advice does not bind the government. The UPSC, along with the country’s higher judiciary and most recently the Election Commission, is among the few constitutional authorities that operate with both autonomy and freedom.

Will Optional be removed from UPSC 2023?

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is all set to announce the new civil services examination schedule for the year 2023 on Thursday. However, there are rumours that Optional may be removed from the examination. This comes as a surprise as it was included in the earlier announcement. The commission has not confirmed or denied any such reports. It is still possible that Optional may be retained, but this needs to be clarified soon.

No, the Optional Subjects are still a part of the UPSC Mains exam and are not removed. Recently, it was rumored that the Optional Subjects would be discontinued from the Mains examination. However, this is not true. The UPSC has clarified that while there may be minor changes to the format of the examinations, the optional subjects will continue to be a part of UPSC examinations.
